How to Choose a Rug
A rug is not simply a piece of carpet lying flat on the floor; rather, a carefully selected rug effortlessly adds a layer of deliberation and style to the space it occupies. The perfect rug brings the individual pieces together and infuse character into the room. However, placing an unsuitable rug in a room is like having pineapples on a pizza, it destroys the harmony of the space. Here are the factors to consider to ensure you will not have a “rug” ret:
1. Size and Shape
There should be ample space between the wall and the rug as you want the floor to be visible as well. One common misconception for many is to assume that if a piece of furniture is on the rug, the whole of the furniture has to be one it. From a design perspective, in fact, the rule of thumb is to have the front legs of the sofa and armchairs on top of the rug. There are no hard and fast rules for the rug shape, however a rectangular rug is typical and suits most occasions, whereas a round rug may be appropriate for the dining room with a round table to flaunt its outlines and design.
2. Color and Style
In addition to placing decoration or painting, placing a rug is another interesting way of adding colors and patterns into a room. Do not try to match the colors of the wall as this will not create the layered look that is ideal for a room. Dark rugs are likely to make the room appear smaller and cozier whilst light-colored rugs on the other hand tend to make it brighter and appear larger. The style is where you can flexibly pick one that reflects your character, with extroverts mostly opting for a more eclectic and flamboyant look.
3. Material
Rugs are available in different materials, with their own pros and cons. Wool rugs are durable and give the space a premium feel, however it should be avoided in damp spaces. Silk rugs are the go-to for luxury, they are exceptionally soft but are difficult to clean. Synthetic fibers like polyester and polypropylene are affordable, easy to clean and stain resistant, but lower quality rugs tend to get crushed over time and require replacing sooner than natural fiber rugs. Many high end modern rugs are now made in quality polypropylene as the manufacturing process allows for the rugs to exhibit a velvet sheen that brings out their luxuriousness.
4. Pile
Different piles give off different looks and comfort. Generally they fall into three categories: Low-pile, medium-pile, and high-pile rugs. Low-pile rugs have shorter fibers and loops and are meant for high traffic areas, whereas high-pile rugs are more comfortable and look more plush. One should also take note that loop piles can be used for high traffic areas but they are not recommended with pets as the claws will get caught in the loops and snap the loops.
5. Rug Pads
Finally, after racking your brain on your dream price, be sure to get rug pads for your rugs. Rug pads can be a lifesaver, protecting you from slipping. They not only extend the life of your rugs, they also protect the floor from getting damaged by furniture. A cushioned rug pad also provides extra plush and comfort.
